Harry Wilbur Bolens was born in Washington, Iowa,
Bolens originally started as a joint partnership in Port Washington, Wisconsin by
J.E. Gilson and H.W. Bolens, manufacturing chair irons and garden tools.
Gilson sold out to Bolens in 1914, Bolens from that point on became a worldwide leader in the manufacturing of outdoor power equipment.
The first tube frame was built in 1962. Noticeably, the tractor is easily identified by it's two long tube cylinders that make up the nearly indestructible frame. 1978 was the last year of production.
Bolens Tube Frame tractors were made for 16 years, most incorporating the same design throughout their production. Many parts are interchangeable from model to model, year to year.
In 1988 FMC Bolens was purchased by Garden Way Troy-Bilt and in 2001 Bolens was sold to MTD Products, who owns the Bolens name today.

moved with his family to Wisconsin in 1866, settling in Janesville, Wisconsin. In 1879 they moved to Port Washington, Wisconsin. Harry Bolens passed away in 1944 at the age of 80.
