Hallelujah Acres® History
In 1976, George Malkmus was a very successful pastor of a large church in upstate New York when he was diagnosed with colon cancer. He had seen what the same
illness had done to his mother, who, as a registered nurse, had followed the doctors' advice to the letter.
She had gone the way of so many – having chemotherapy,
radiation treatments, and surgery – and had succumbed
to them. Feeling like the treatment was more of a threat than a cure, he went in search of an alternative.
Rev. Malkmus turned to an evangelist friend in Texas,
Lester Roloff (considered by many to be a "health nut"), who advised him NOT to go the medical route, but to simply change his diet to raw fruits and vegetables, and to drink lots of fresh carrot juice. He did, and slowly but surely, symptoms began to dissipate and disappear. So he studied everything he could, including the Bible, about this simple way of eating, and found the answers he was looking for in Genesis 1:29.
In 1976, after a year of living this new lifestyle, Rev. Malkmus' baseball-sized tumor had disappeared, as
did every other physical problem. His body had been restored. This gave Rev. Malkmus a new vision: to tell
the world about this change, starting with the Christian community; having been a pastor for twenty years, he felt compelled to share this life-saving information. He spread his news as his "Hallelujah," a
biblical word used to express praise, joy, and thanksgiving.
In 1986, George purchased a fifty-acre mountain farm in Eidson, TN, and added the word "Acres." This would
eventually become his new ministry.
In 1989, Rev. Malkmus wrote his first book, Why Christians Get Sick, to share his knowledge and healing experience. Today, more than 300,000 copies of
this bestseller are in print, and because of it, he has held seminars in churches and before civic groups
all over the United States, South Africa, Australia, and Canada.
But during the early years of Hallelujah Acres®, walking into Christian churches and encouraging people
to switch to a vegetarian diet of mainly raw foods was
not popular. In fact, most Christians shunned Rev. Malkmus' message. So he began to show that the body of
modern medical science supported the wisdom of the original diet given to mankind by God in Genesis 1:29.
Those who did listen, and who changed their diet, healed themselves. And soon they offered powerful testimonies, making their wellness contagious. When people who were sick sincerely applied the dietary program taught by Hallelujah Acres®, they usually regained their health, and others saw their results.
One of these people was Rhonda Jean, who went to one of George's health seminars wearing a size 20 dress, almost crippled with arthritis. About a year after changing her diet and lifestyle, she had lost over 80
pounds, and her arthritis was totally gone. Even her degenerated spine, the result of a bout with spinal meningitis at age 7, had healed, with X-rays showing the spine degeneration was gone less than two years after changing her diet and lifestyle! On February 12,
1992, Rev. Malkmus opened the Hallelujah Acres® restaurant and health food store, a small storefront with a 16-person capacity, in the small town of Rogersville, TN (population 5,000). On April 11, 1992,
George and Rhonda were married.
On March 1, 1993, they relocated the restaurant to a 56-person capacity space because more and more people
flocked to the ministry to obtain better food and to hear Rev. Malkmus' health message. The Hallelujah Acres® restaurant was successful because it showed people that this raw vegetarian diet – The Hallelujah
Diet® - is healthy AND tastes great. However, the business took the majority of his time, so he closed it in 1994 in order to disseminate his message of hope
to a larger audience through his ministry.
On their 50–acre farm in Eidson, TN, George and Rhonda
concentrated on reaching a wider audience through seminars; books; the Back to the GardenSM newsletters;
video and audio tapes; radio and television appearances; and the Health Ministry, where people came from across the country to learn more, and then to share that information with others in their own communities. George also traveled the country, giving
his seminar and telling all who would hear that, "You
Don't Have to be SickSM!'
In 1995, Rev. Malkmus published his second book, God's
Way to Ultimate Health, which includes comprehensive information on how to maintain or regain health in accordance with God's natural laws. There are more than 250,000 copies of this bestseller in print today.
As Rev. Malkmus' message spread to more and more people, office space became too small to accommodate all of Hallelujah Acres®, and again George and Rhonda
needed a larger facility. In November 1997, they moved
Hallelujah Acres® to a former Bible college on seventeen beautiful acres in Shelby, NC, where monthly
seminars, Health MinisterSM Trainings, the Health MinisterSM Reunion, and other events are held; the Hallelujah Acres CaféSM and store also operate at this
location. The Hallelujah Acres® Foundation – an organization devoted to documenting the healing power
of The Hallelujah Diet® – was also established in
1997.
In 1998, Dr. Michael Donaldson, PhD, a chemical engineering graduate from Cornell University, joined the Hallelujah Acres® team as Head of Research for the
Hallelujah Acres® Foundation. In this same year, Rhonda Malkmus released her first book, Recipes for Life… from God's Garden, and Hallelujah Acres® held its first annual Health MinisterSM Reunion.
In 1999, Rev. Malkmus officially opened Hallelujah Acres® Canada in Shallow Lake, Ontario; the School of
Natural Health was started; and the ministry initiated
the first of its six Women's Retreats.
The future holds bright promise and great dreams for the Hallelujah Acres® ministry – a dream of reaching the whole world with the knowledge and message,
"You Don't Have to be Sick! SM"
