When the day begins an angel is near
Whispering encouragement in my ear
My day gets long before it even begins
And looking ahead everything's grim
As the day goes on it gets swift and tough
My angel and I have to keep up
Assaulted on all sides we both face defeat
Throughout the day numerous battles fought
We almost get beat.
When the day is done we both wearily retire
Tomorrow looks the same, bogged down in mire
Day to day we must go on though we grow tired
And at night dream of a day we'll no longer be under fire
May angels be with you is the prayer that I pray
As I retire at the end of each day
For among angels is where you do belong
As sure as the years of our lives are long
So great is the service it may go unseen
Undercover angels with hidden wings
Whether it's only for minutes or hours we stay
When the day starts out rough
and we have to get away
I walk through the door and it brightens the day
It could be grilled hamburgers or hotdogs
Or playing cards and watching the antics of the dog
It doesn't matter what happens only that we're there
Cause it gives me a reason to get through the next day
This is the debt I try to repay
though it's never enough
For keeping me sane
when the anger flows through every vein
So when your time comes sad though we may be
May flights of angels line up wanting to carry you over
Their wings so white and soft as clover
With robes long and billowy swaying like trees
To go before the Lord everyone on bended knee
And receive the reward I could never repay
As long as I tried or how much I say
For the love and friendship you have given me
