ONLINE VACATION

BURLINGTON, VERMONT, USA

12/13/13

Hi Everyone. Today's trip is taking us about as far north as we can
get and still be in the United States. We are going to Burlington,
Vermont, which is located about 45 miles from the Canadian border.

Burlington is the largest city in the State of Vermont and the shire
town (county seat) of Chittenden County. Burlington had a population
of 42,417 at the 2010 census. The town was organized in 1785.

Burlington is situated on the eastern shore of Lake Champlain. It was
built on a strip of land extending along the lake shore, and rises
from the water's edge to a height of 300 feet.

The town's position on Lake Champlain helped it develop into a port
of entry and center for trade, particularly after completion of the
Champlain Canal in 1823, the Erie Canal in 1825, and the Chambly Canal
in 1843. Wharves allowed steamboats to connect freight and passengers
with the railroads. Burlington became a bustling lumbering and
manufacturing center, and incorporated as a city in 1865. Its
Victorian era prosperity left behind much fine architecture.

The Church Street Marketplace, a four-block pedestrian mall in the
heart of the city, is the site of festivals throughout the year.
One of the largest year-round farmers markets in the state is
located in the city. Forbes magazine selected the city in 2010 as
one of the "prettiest" towns in America, featuring a picture of the
Church Street Marketplace.

One of the most famous names in America is located in Burlington. The
ice cream enterprise Ben & Jerry's was founded in Burlington in 1978
in a renovated gas station. Another very popular company located
there is the Vermont Christmas Company. You might not recognize the
name, but they are one of the leading jigsaw puzzle makers.

January is normally the coldest month with average temperatures between
10 and 26 degrees Fahrenheit. July is normally the warmest month
with average temperatures between 60 and 80 degrees F. July is
usually the rainiest month with an average of 3.8 inches, and a
yearly average of 34.1 inches of rain. January is normally the
snowiest month with an average of 18.4 inches, and a yearly average
of 73.4 inches of snow.

I hope you enjoy this beautiful Christmas decorated city, and scenery.
