CRIMEA, UKRAINE
9/15/13
The Crimea is surprising and various. There are mountains, seas,
plains and heights, rivers and lakes.
But that’s not all. There are 5 canyons in Crimea.
The deepest canyon in Ukraine is the Grand Canyon of Crimea.
It is located in the northern slope of Aj-Petri mountain, Crimean main ridge.
At the bottom of the canyon the river Auzen Uzen is flowing.
There are numerous rapids, waterfalls, piled boulders and blocks.
The area of the Grand Canyon is almost completely covered
with forest. The lower parts of the northern slopes are
covered with oak forests mixed with ash and maple.
The Grand Canyon of Crimea, in contrast to their
American "colleague" is richer in flora. Here you will find
hornbeam, beech, ash can, as well as rare species of ferns,
and even a rare lady's slipper orchid.
Since 1974, Grand Canyon is declared by the State Wildlife Sanctuaries
of Ukraine. It belongs to the Kuibyshev State Forestry.
The weather in Crimea during the summer season is very much
Mediterranean. Expect relatively hot weather and lots of thunderstorms
that come and go. It is hot and very humid
at night. In the winter snow can cover the mountains
and make the roads almost impassable.
After we are done looking at the Grand Canyon of Crimea,
we are going to look at the Swallow's Nest Castle.
The neo-Gothic Swallow's Nest castle perches 130 feet above
the Black Sea near Yalta in southern Ukraine. Built by
a German noble in 1912, the flamboyant seaside residence
is now a popular tourist destination. We might have to
come back again to check this out some more.
We are also going to stop for something to eat.
We are having Tater "Chebureki" that is filled with
cheese or cabbage. Which do you prefer?
I hope you have enjoyed this online trip to the
Grand Canyon of Crimea, on the Crimean Peninsula, Ukraine.
