ANKARA, ANATOLIA, TURKEY

3/6/14

Hi Everyone. Our trip today is to Ankara, Anatolia, Turkey. I don't
know anything about this area, so I will learn with you.

Ankara, historically known with the names Ancyra and Angora, is the
capital of Turkey since the Ottoman Empire's fall in 1923. The city
has an average elevation of 3,077 feet and has a population of
4,338,620, as of 2010.

Centrally located in Anatolia, Ankara is an important commercial and
industrial city. It is the center of the Turkish Government, and
houses all foreign embassies. It is an important crossroads of trade,
strategically located at the center of Turkey's highway and railway
networks, and serves as the marketing center for the surrounding
agricultural area. The city was famous for its long-haired Angora goat
and its prized wool (mohair), a unique breed of cat (Angora cat),
Angora rabbits and their prized wool (Angora wool), pears, honey, and
the region's muscat grapes. (See page 2 to see the animals.)

The historical center of Ankara is situated upon a rocky hill, which rises
492 feet above the plain on the left bank of the Ankara Çayı, a
tributary of the Sakarya (Sangarius) river.

Ankara is a very old city with various archaeological sites. The hill
which overlooks the city is crowned by the ruins of the old castle,
which adds to the picturesqueness of the view. Only a few historic
structures surrounding the old citadel have survived to the present
day. The most remarkable historical structure is the Temple of
Augustus and Rome (20 BC) which is also known as the Monumentum
Ancyranum.

January is normally the coldest month with average temperatures between
27 and 40 degrees Fahrenheit. July and August are normally the
warmest months with average temperatures between 74 and 86 degrees F.
May tends to be the rainiest month with an average of 2.02 inches, and
a yearly average of 16.1 inches of rain. I didn't find out how much
snow they get a month or year, but they average 42 days of snow a
year. Also their record snowfall for one day was on May 01, 2002 when
they got 11.6 inches of snow.

I hope you enjoy this trip to Ankara, Anatolia, Turkey. And if you are
interested in seeing the animals, check out Page 2 from the bottom of
this page.
