Memphis is a city in the southwestern corner of the U.S. state of
Tennessee, and the county seat of Shelby County. Memphis had a
population of 655,155 in 2012, making it the largest city in the
state of Tennessee. Memphis occupies a substantial bluff rising
from the Mississippi River. It sits at an elevation of 337 feet
above sea level.
Nicknames of Memphis: The River City, The Bluff City, Blues City,
Birthplace of Rock and Roll, The BBQ Capital of the World.
Memphis was the location of Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I've Been To The
Mountaintop" speech on April 3, 1968. He was assassinated at the
Lorraine Hotel on April 4, 1968. (I did not know today is the
anniversary until I was putting the page together).
Memphis has 4 distinct seasons. January is normally the coldest month
with average temperatures between 33 and 50 °F. July is normally the
warmest month with average temperatures between 74 and 92 °F.
December tends to be the rainiest month with an average of 5.7 inches,
and a yearly average of 53.7 inches of rain. January tends to be the
snowiest month with an average of 1.9 inches, and a yearly average of
3.9 inches of snow. The lowest temperature ever recorded was -13 °F
on December 24, 1963. The highest temperature ever recorded was
108 °F on July 13, 1980.
