8/30/13

HI EVERYONE. YESTERDAY, WE WERE AT THE CAPE COD LIGHTHOUSE
IN MASSACHUSETTS. TODAY, WE ARE GOING TO
ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI TO SEE THE GATEWAY ARCH.

THE GATEWAY ARCH IS A 630-FOOT MONUMENT. CLAD IN
STAINLESS STEEL AND BUILT IN THE FORM OF A FLATTENED
CATENARY ARCH, IT IS THE TALLEST MAN-MADE MONUMENT IN THE
U.S., AND THE WORLD'S TALLEST ARCH. BUILT AS A MONUMENT
TO THE WESTWARD EXPANSION OF THE UNITED STATES, IT IS
THE CENTERPIECE AND HAS BECOME AN INTERNATIONALLY FAMOUS
SYMBOL OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI. THE ARCH SITS ON THE
WEST BANK OF THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER.

THE GATEWAY ARCH WAS DESIGNED BY FINNISH-AMERICAN ARCHITECT,
EERO SAARINEN AND GERMAN-AMERICAN STRUCTURAL ENGINEER
HANNSKARL BANDEL IN 1947. CONSTRUCTION BEGAN ON FEBRUARY 12, 1963
AND ENDED ON OCTOBER 28, 1965. IT COST ABOUT $13 MILLION
AT THE TIME, WHICH WOULD BE APPROXIMATELY $94 MILLION NOW.
THE MONUMENT OPENED TO THE PUBLIC ON JUNE 10, 1967.

THE ARCH IS DESIGNED TO SWAY WITH THE WIND.
IT MOVES UP TO AN INCH IN A 20 MILE PER HOUR
WIND AND CAN SWAY UP TO 18 INCHES IF THE
WINDS HIT 150 MILES PER HOUR. THERE ARE 1,076 STAIRS
GOING UP EACH LEG OF THE ARCH, BUT THE TRAM
SYSTEM CARRIES MOST VISITORS TO THE TOP. ON A CLEAR DAY,
YOU CAN SEE FOR ABOUT 30 MILES FROM ATOP THE ARCH.

I HOPE YOU ENJOYED YOUR VISIT TO THE
GATEWAY ARCH IN ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
