PUNXSUTAWNEY, PENNSYLVANIA, USA

2/2/14

Hi Everyone. Since today is Groundhog Day, I thought I would take you to
Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania to see where the groundhog Phil lives. I
grew up about 25 miles away from Punxsy (as the locals call it).

Punxsutawney is a borough in Jefferson County, Pennsylvania, USA. As
of the 2010 census, there were 5,962 residents. The town was settled
in 1816 and incorporated in 1850.

The area was originally settled by the Delaware Indians, and the
name "Punxsutawney" derives from a Native American term which
translates to "town of the sandflies".

Punxsutawney is one of the most famous small towns in America thanks to
Punxsutawney Phil. Every year on Groundhog Day (February 2),
thousands of people make the trek to Gobbler's Knob to hear
Punxsutawney Phil's prediction for the length of winter. If he sees
his shadow when he emerges from his burrow there will be six more
weeks of winter weather; no shadow foretells an early spring.
Punxsutawney Phil and the town were the basis for the 1993 film
Groundhog Day (although nearly all of the movie itself was shot in
Woodstock, Illinois).

The T. M. Kurtz House, Jefferson Theater, Christian Miller House, and
United States Post Office-Punxsutawney are listed on the National
Register of Historic Places.

Something unique about the town is that they have groundhog statues
throughout the town, and they are all designed and dressed
differently.

Punxsutawney and the surrounding area has a large Amish population. It is
common to see them traveling in horse and buggy.

January is normally the coldest month with average temperatures between 16
and 33 degrees Fahrenheit. July is normally the warmest month with
average temperatures between 57 and 79 degrees F. July tends to be
the rainiest month with an average of 4.2 inches, and a yearly average
of 38.9 inches of rain. March has the highest average of snowfall
with 9.5 inches, and a yearly total of 41.7 inches of snow. The
lowest recorded temperature is -27 degrees F. and the highest is 101.

I hope you enjoy this visit to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, and remember to
say "hi" to Punxsutawney Phil.
