NEW HOPE, PENNSYLVANIA, USA
2/18/14
New Hope is a borough in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, USA. The population
was 2,528 at the 2010 census. The borough lies on the west bank of the
Delaware River where it connects with Aquetong Creek.
The surrounding area features low, rolling hills, and consists largely of
preserved forest and farmland.
New Hope's primary industry is tourism. On weekends, the streets are
crowded with tourists visiting the many restaurants, antique shops,
and art galleries, or taking the popular walk along the river and the
Delaware Canal. New Hope has a vibrant night life. New Hope is also a
terminal point on the New Hope & Ivyland Railroad. On weekends,
tourists can ride the historic and scenic line through Bucks County.
New Hope has historically been a popular spot for Broadway shows to be
tested and fine tuned, and many notable stage actors bought weekend
homes in the area.
New Hope is 6 miles north of the spot where George Washington crossed the
Delaware. The night prior to his famous crossing of the Delaware
River, George Washington is said to have lodged in New Hope.
Unfortunately, New Hope had a tragedy. In 1983, NBC network anchorwoman
Jessica Savitch and her boyfriend drowned after their car overturned
into the Delaware Canal. The canal passes by Odette's Restaurant,
where the couple had dined on a rainy evening when visibility was poor
and warning signs were missed.
January is normally the coldest month with average temperatures between
22 and 40 degrees Fahrenheit. July is normally the warmest month with
average temperatures between 63 and 87 degrees F. July tends to be
the rainiest month with an average of 4.7 inches, and a yearly average
of 46.4 inches of rain. January and February tend to be the snowiest
months with an average of 6.5 inches each month, and a yearly average
of 22.1 inches of snow.
I hope you enjoy this trip to New Hope, Pennsylvania.
