WATERFALLS NEAR PORTLAND, OREGON
9/17/13
SOME OF THE BEST WATERFALLS NEAR PORTLAND, OREGON, EXIST IN
THE COLUMBIA RIVER GORGE SCENIC AREA EAST OF THE CITY.
THE SCENIC AREA PROTECTS AT LEAST 77 WATERFALLS THAT INCLUDE
HORSETAIL, TIERED, AND PLUNGE FORMATIONS.
I AM GOING TO TRY TO SHOW YOU SOME OF
THE DIFFERENT KINDS OF WATERFALLS NEAR PORTLAND.
MULTNOMAH FALLS
AS THE COUNTRY'S SECOND TALLEST YEAR-ROUND WATERFALL, MULTNOMAH FALLS
MAKES ONE OF THE BEST WATERFALLS TO VISIT. IT IS
A NARROW, 620-FOOT HIGH FALLS. THE FIRST SET OF FALLS
DROPS MORE THAN 500 FEET INTO A QUIET POOL.
THE SECOND SET OF FALLS COMING OUT OF THE POOL
FLOWS BELOW A STONE FOOTAGE CONSTRUCTED IN THE EARLY 1900'S.
A 1.2 MILE HIKE TAKES YOU TO A
PLATFORM AT THE TOP OF THE WATERFALLS.
LATOURELL FALLS FEATURES A PATTERN OF JOINTS CAUSED BY STRESS WHEN LAVA COOLED AND CONTRACTED, CREATING INTERESTING PRISMS AND COLUMNS OVER WHICH THE FALLS DROP. THE LOWER LATOURELL FALLS DROP 240 FEET, WHILE THE UPPER FALLS CASCADE DOWN ABOUT 100 FEET.
