MC ADENVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA, USA
12/22/13
McAdenville is a small town in Gaston County, North Carolina, United
States. It is a suburb of both Charlotte and Gastonia. The population
was 651 at the 2010 census.
For nearly six decades, the little North Carolina town of McAdenville
lures some 600,000 visitors to witness its transformation into what’s
been dubbed “Christmas Town USA.” A high-spirited partnership between
town residents and a local manufacturing company allows the hamlet to
trim more than 375 fir trees (they outnumber the households!) with
nearly a half-million red, green, and white holiday lights. The trees
range in size from 6-footers adorned with 500 lights to 90-foot-high
behemoths bedecked in some 5,000 radiant bulbs. Recorded Christmas
carols broadcast from a local church add to the high-powered
Christmas feel.
A Christmas tradition in the town for many years has been the decorating
of the entire town in Christmas lights. The event is called Christmas
Town USA. The lights attract visitors from all over the country and is
one of the biggest light shows in the US. Begun in 1956 with the
assistance of Pharr Yarns, the largest employer and land owner in the
town, many trees and buildings in the town are covered in Christmas
lights and some form of decoration. More than 300,000 vehicles visit
each year. The lights are entirely maintained by volunteers from the
community, and no admission is charged. Pharr Yarns picks up the
electric bill for the event.
McAdenville was incorporated in 1881. It was named after Rufus Yancey
McAden, president of McAden Mills, the town's textile mill. He came
to Charlotte in 1867 to become president of the two-year old First
National Bank.
January is normally the coldest month with average temperatures between
32 and 52 degrees Fahrenheit. July is normally the warmest month
with average temperatures between 69 and 90 degrees F. March and
August normally have the most rain with 4.4 inches for each month,
and a yearly average of 45.2 inches of rain. There is a listing of
snow in December, January, February, and March, but less than an inch
for each month, and a yearly average of less than 3 inches of snow
a year.
I hope you enjoy this trip to see some spectacular Christmas lights. Only
a couple more days until Christmas.
