CHAMPAGNE POOL, NEW ZEALAND
10/04/13
Champagne Pool is a lake in New Zealand, situated in the
North Island. The lake is a natural hot springs spa in
the area of Wai-O-Tapu, in the Waikato region. The name
Champagne Pool is derived from the abundant efflux of carbon dioxide (CO2),
similar to a glass of bubbling champagne. The hot spring was
formed 900 years ago by a hydrothermal eruption, which makes it in
geological terms a relatively young system. Its crater is around 213
feet in diameter with a maximum depth of approximately 203 feet and
is filled with geothermal fluid.
The deep geothermal water below Champagne Pool
is about 500 °F but water temperature within the pool is maintained
at 163 °F to 167 °F by losing heat to the atmosphere.
I hope you enjoy looking at the hot spring,
known as Champagne Pool, in New Zealand.
