Watkins Glen is a village in Schuyler County, New York, United States.
The population was 1,859 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat
of Schuyler County. The Village of Watkins Glen lies within the
towns of Dix and Reading. Located on the southern tip of Seneca
Lake, one of western New York's glacial Finger Lakes, Watkins Glen
is the site of scenic Watkins Glen State Park.
It is also known for its role in auto racing. It is the home of a
street course used in road racing, a famous racetrack, Watkins Glen
International, and a historic race, the Watkins Glen Grand Prix.
Watkins Glen is also the home port for True Love, an 84-plus-year-old
schooner that has been featured in several Hollywood movies,
including High Society (1956) and The Philadelphia Story (1940).
This magnificent wooden sailboat is now available for charter on
the Seneca Lake.
January is normally the coldest month with an average temperature
between 16 and 34 degrees Fahrenheit. July is normally the warmest
month with an average temperature between 57 and 84 degrees F. May
is normally the rainiest month with an average of 3.7 inches, and a
yearly average of 32.5 inches of rain. February is normally the
snowiest month with an average of 8.9 inches, and a yearly average
of 36.7 inches of snow.
I was at Watkins Glen Falls when I was young. It is a beautiful place.
