TOKYO, JAPAN
2/219/14
Tokyo is one of the 47 prefectures of Japan. Tokyo is the capital
of Japan, and the largest metropolitan area in the world. It is
the seat of the Japanese government and the Imperial Palace, and
the home of the Japanese Imperial Family. Tokyo is in the Kantô
region on the southeastern side of the main island Honshu and
includes the Izu Islands and Ogasawara Islands.
Tokyo was originally a small fishing village named Edo. The name
was changed to Tokyo in 1868 when it became the imperial capital.
The 2011 Tôhoku earthquake and tsunami that devastated much of the
northeastern coast of Honshu was felt in Tokyo. However, due to
Tokyo's earthquake-resistant infrastructure, damage in Tokyo was very
minor compared to areas directly hit by the tsunami. The subsequent
nuclear crisis caused by the tsunami has also largely left Tokyo
unaffected, despite occasional spikes in radiation levels.
Tokyo hosted the Summer Olympic Games in 1964, and is scheduled to
host the games again in 2020.
Tokyo's average elevation is about 131 feet above sea level. Their
flower is the Cherry Blossom, and their tree is the Gingko Tree.
The bird is the Black-headed Gull.
January is normally the coldest month with average temperatures between
37 and 50 degrees Fahrenheit. July is normally the warmest month
with average temperatures between 73 and 85 degrees F. September
tends to be the rainiest month with an average of 8.3 inches, and a
yearly average of 60.2 inches of rain. January and February tend
to be the only months with recordable snowfall. They average 2
inches in those months, for a yearly average of 4 inches of snow.
Their record low temperature was 15 degrees F., and their highest
recorded temperature was 103.
I hope you enjoy this visit to Tokyo, Japan.
