SICILY, ITALY
2/23/14
Sicily is the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea; along with
surrounding minor islands, it constitutes an autonomous region of
Italy, the Regione Siciliana (Sicilian Region).
Sicily is located in the central Mediterranean. It extends from the tip
of the Apennine peninsula, from which it is separated only by the
narrow Strait of Messina, towards the North African coast. Its most
prominent landmark is Mount Etna, which at 10,890 feet, is the tallest
active volcano in Europe and one of the most active in the world.
Sicily has a roughly triangular shape. To the east, it is separated from
the Italian region of Calabria by the Strait of Messina, about 1.9
miles wide in the north, and about 9.9 miles in the southern part.
Northern and southern coasts are each about 170 miles long measured as
a straight line, while the eastern coast measures around 110 miles;
total coast length is estimated at 922 miles. Sicily had a population
of about 5 million as of 2010.
January is normally the coldest month with average temperatures between
41 and 60 degrees Fahrenheit. July is normally the warmest month with
average temperatures between 66 and 92 degrees F. They have very
little rainfall, but October tends to be the rainiest with an average
of 2.9 inches, and a yearly average of 17.5 inches of rain. There is
no record of snowfall.
Since I used many different cities in Sicily, I have just labeled all the
photos as the city name.
I hope you enjoy this trip to Sicily, Italy.
