REYKJAVIK, ICELAND
4/28/14
Reykjavík is the capital and largest city of Iceland. It is located in
southwestern Iceland, on the southern shore of the Faxaflói Bay. With
a population of around 121,190 in 2013, it is the heart of Iceland's
cultural, economic and governmental activity.
Reykjavík is believed to be the location of the first permanent settlement
in Iceland. Until the 18th century, there was no urban development in
the city location. The city was founded in 1786 as an official trading
town and grew steadily over the next decades, as it transformed into a
regional and later national center of commerce, population, and
governmental activities. It is among the cleanest, greenest, and
safest cities in the world.
Their temperatures are what has surprised me the most. I always thought
of Iceland as being extremely cold. It isn't near as cold as I
thought. January is normally the coldest month with average
temperatures between 27 and 36° F. July is normally the warmest
month with average temperatures between 47 and 55° F. There is not
a very big swing in temperatures throughout the year. The lowest
temperature ever recorded was -12° F on January 21, 1918. The
highest temperature ever recorded was 79° F on July 30, 2008.
October tends to be the rainiest month with an average of 3.5 inches
of rain, and a yearly average of 32.2 inches of rain. I didn't find
a recording of snowfall.
I hope you enjoyed this visit to Reykjavik, Iceland.
