Hanalei is a census-designated place (CDP) in Kauai County, Hawaii,
United States. Hanalei means "lei making" in Hawaiian. The name
Hanalei also means "crescent bay" and may be from the shape of
Hanalei Bay.
Hanalei is located near the mouth of the Hanalei River on the north
shore of the island of Kauai. The population was 450 at the 2010
census.
Hanalei was the backdrop of several film productions, such as the 1958
musical film "South Pacific". Scenes were filmed in the town itself
and at Lumahai Beach to the west of Hanalei. Scenes for the
movie "The Descendants", starring George Clooney, were filmed in and
around Hanalei, on the beach at Hanalei Bay and in nearby Princeville.
The beach at Hanalei Bay was selected number one on 2009 list of
top 10 beaches.
January and February are normally the coldest months with average
temperatures between 64 and 79 degrees F. August is normally the
warmest month with average temperatures between 72 and 87 degrees F.
They get a lot of rain there, with April being the rainiest month with
an average of 17.6 inches and a yearly average of 143.9 inches of
rain. Their lowest recorded temperature was 48 degrees F. Their
highest recorded temperature was 95 degrees F. They average only 5
days of temperature over 90 degrees F a year.
