NUUK, VESTGRONLAND, GREENLAND
3/10/14
First, let's learn about the country of Greenland, then we will learn
about the city of Nuuk. Greenland is an self-governing country within
the Kingdom of Denmark, located between the Arctic and Atlantic
Oceans, east of the Canadian Arctic Archipelago. Though graphically a
part of the continent of North America, Greenland has been politically
and culturally associated with Europe (specifically Norway and later
Denmark). Greenland is, in terms of area, the world's largest island.
Over three-quarters of the island is covered by the only contemporary
ice sheet outside of Antarctica. With a population of 56,370 in 2013,
it is the least densely populated country in the world.
Now, we will learn about Nuuk, the capital city of Greenland. Nuuk is
the capital and largest city of Greenland. It is in the state of
Vestgronland, and the seat of government, as well as the country's
largest cultural and economic center. Nuuk is the seat of government
for the Sermersooq municipality. In January 2013, it had a population
of 16,454, making it one of the smallest capital cities in the world
by population.
Nuuk means "cape". It is so named because of its position at the end of
the Nuup Kangerlua fjord on the eastern shore of the Labrador Sea. A
fjord is a narrow inlet of the sea between cliffs or steep slopes .
Nuuk is the world's northernmost capital.
There are two languages spoken there. Danish and Kalaallisut. Nuuk has a
hospital and a university. Nuuk is a good place for buying high
quality art and craftwork. In July 2012 Greenland's first shopping
center, Nuuk Center, opened. The center has Greenland's first
underground parking. Several supermarkets exist, such as Pisiffik,
Brugsen and Spar.
January is normally the coldest month with average temperatures between
11 and 19 degrees Fahrenheit. July is normally the warmest month with
average temperatures between 40 and 49 degrees F. September tends to
be the rainiest month with an average of 3.2 inches, and a yearly
average of 23.9 inches of rain. I didn't find how many inches of snow
they receive, but they average 56 days of snow per year. June, July,
and August has the most snow days with an average of 12 - 14. Their
record low was -19 degrees F., while their record high was 72 degrees
F. December tends to have the shortest hours of daylight, with an
average of 5 1/2 hours. June tends to have the longest hours of
daylight, with an average of 22 1/2 hours. It's a land of extremes.
The temperature average of 43.7 °F in July, the warmest month, is colder
than what is considered the limit for trees (50 °F). There are a few
planted trees, which do not sustain well.
In doing the page, I noticed that the houses are all very well maintained
and brightly painted.
I hope you enjoy this trip to Nuuk, Vestronland, Greenland.
