KASTORIA, GREECE
12/29/13
Kastoria is a city in northern Greece in the region of West Macedonia. It
is the capital of Kastoria regional unit. It is situated on a
promontory on the western shore of Lake Orestiada, in a valley
surrounded by limestone mountains. The town is known for its many
Byzantine churches, Ottoman-era domestic architecture, fur clothing
industry, wheat, apples, wine, and fish.
Kastoria is an important religious center for the Greek Orthodox Church.
It originally had 72 Byzantine and medieval churches, of which 54 have
survived. Some of these have been restored and provide useful insight
into trends in Late Byzantine styles of architecture and fresco
painting. The Museum of Byzantine History, the Costume Museum and the
Monuments Museum are also located in the city. Kastoria is filled with
old manors dating to the Ottoman period, while parts of the old
Byzantine walls also stand.
As of 2011, Kastoria had a population of 13,387. January is normally
the coldest month with average temperatures between 26 and 40 degrees
Fahrenheit. July is normally the warmest month with average
temperatures between 58 and 84 degrees F. December tends to be the
rainiest month with an average of 3.4 inches, and a yearly average of
25.4 inches of rain. January, February and December each get an
average of 3 inches, and a yearly average of 12 inches of snow.
I hope you enjoy this trip to Kastoria, Greece.
