Daytona Beach is a city in Volusia County, Florida, United States.
In the 2010 U.S. Census, it had a population of 61,005. Daytona Beach
is also a principal city of the Fun Coast region of Florida. The city
attracts over 8,000,000 tourists each year.
The city was founded in 1870 and incorporated in 1876. Their elevation is
13 feet above sea level. The city of Daytona Beach is split in two by
the Halifax River lagoon, part of the Intracoastal Waterway, and sits
on the Atlantic Ocean.
Daytona Beach has three nicknames: "The World's Most Famous
Beach", "The Spring Break Capital of the World", "World Center of
Racing".
The city is historically known for its beach where the hard-packed sand
allows motorized vehicles to drive on the beach in restricted areas.
This hard-packed sand made Daytona Beach a mecca for motorsports, and
the old Daytona Beach Road Course hosted races for over 50 years. This
was replaced in 1959 by the Daytona International Speedway. The city
is also the headquarters for NASCAR and the Grand American Road Racing
Association.
Daytona Beach has many things in the city besides racing. They have many
different museums featuring art and science. They are also home to
four universities and colleges.
January is normally the coolest month with an average between 47 and 68
degrees Fahrenheit. July is normally the warmest month with an
average between 73 and 90 degrees F. September tends to be the
rainiest month with an average of 6.96 inches, and a yearly average
of 49.9 inches of rain.
