GRAND JUNCTION, COLORADO, USA

4/7/14

Hi Everyone. Our trip today is to Grand Junction, Colorado. One of
my friends requested this trip, so let's go exploring.

The City of Grand Junction is the largest city in western Colorado. It
is the county seat and the most populous city of Mesa County,
Colorado, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population of
the city was 58,566.

Grand Junction is located on the Colorado Western Slope. The city is
located along the Colorado River, where it receives the Gunnison River
from the south. The name "Grand" refers to the historical Grand River,
which was renamed the upper Colorado River in 1921, and the
word "Junction" is from the joining of the Colorado and Gunnison
rivers. Hence, Grand Junction has been given the nickname "River
City". The city sits near the midpoint of a 30-mile (48 km) arcing
valley, known as the Grand Valley, a major fruit-growing region. It
was settled by farmers in the 1880s. In recent years, several
wineries have been established in the area as well.

The Colorado National Monument, a unique series of canyons and mesas,
overlooks the city on the west, while most of the area is surrounded
by public lands managed by the Bureau of Land Management. The Book
Cliffs are a prominent series of cliffs that define the northern side
of the Grand Valley.

Grand Junction is about 4,597 feet (1,401 m) above sea level in what is
called "high desert" country. It's nicknames are: "Junction", "River
City", "Colorado's Wine Country", and "Capital of the Western Slope".

January is normally the coldest month with average temperatures between
17 and 38° F. July is normally the warmest month with average
temperatures between 63 and 93° F. They get very little rain, with
many months averaging less than an inch. September tends to be the
rainiest with an average of 1.2 inch, and a yearly average of 9.4
inches of rain. December and January tend to be the snowiest months
with an average of 4.9 inches each month, and a yearly average of 19.1
inches of snow. Their record high was 106° F and the lowest was -23° F.

I hope you enjoy this trip to Grand Junction, Colorado.
