HUILA-HUILA BIOLOGICAL RESERVE, ANDES MOUNTAINS, CHILE
9/26/13
We are going to the Hotel La Montana Magica.
On the outside, the hotel is made of rocks formed
in the shape of a volcano. Instead of spewing lava
(which would be dangerous), water spills out the top.
Over the years, moss, ferns and even flowers have taken
root between the water drenched rocks, that whole sections of
the hotel's exterior blends into the forest background.
Getting to the remote Huilo-Huilo Biological Reserve can be
an adventure. To get to the hotel, you have to
go across a suspended, not entirely sturdy-feeling "monkey bridge".
Inside the hotel, almost everything is made from locally sourced
wood. In some spots of the floor, planks do not
align. Also sawed-off branches stick out awkwardly.
Hotel La Montana Magica has 13 rooms, which are comfortable
and atmospheric, but definitely not luxury. Each room has
an en-suite bathroom, and a comfy bed, but sparsely furnished.
Because of the hotel's volcanic shape, the rooms get smaller
as you move up levels. On the bottom floor, the
rooms are about the size of an average U.S. hotel
room. On the top floor of the hotel, the room
is so small that it can only accommodate a bunk bed.
The most popular room is one in the middle and
on the side to see a great view of the waterfall.
Inside the hotel is a children's playroom, a reading room,
a restaurant, and a cozy bar. A night at the
Hotel La Montana Magica would cost about $300 U.S. dollars
for two people with a buffet breakfast.
I hope you enjoy this trip
