NUNAVIK,QUEBEC, CANADA
9/20/13
Nunavik is in Quebec's arctic region. It is reached by airplane only.
It is made up of wild tundra, forest, scenic mountains, majestic rivers
and countless lakes. This unspoiled region is home to many varieties of
plants, fish and other wildlife, each species adapted to the North.
Be prepared for a genuine outdoor adventure! The mountains are spectacular,
especially the Torngat Mountains. Because of the vast tundra, we will
check in with the provincial police force so they know we are here.
The different seasons, but especially summer and winter, present two
totally different environments. In summer, the temperatures vary between
48 and 51 degrees Fahrenheit, and the sun almost never goes down.
It only brushes on the horizon. The residents of Nunavik take advantage
of this summer season to stock up on food, to fish, hunt
and pick berries. Of course, winter brings cold weather and darkness,
and everyone tries to get their few hours of sun everyday.
Summer is an ideal time to visit Nunavik. The region is alive
with wildlife such as caribou doe and their newborn calves, as well
as roaming black bear and musk-ox. Migratory waterfowl such as Canada
geese and eider duck, which makes their nests on offshore islands and
await the hatching of their young, make Nunavik their temporary
home along with other smaller birds.
In winter, though the sun rises for only a few brief hours,
its rays make the snow-covered landscape sparkle brilliantly.
Winter in Nunavik is a unique experience. The long, cold nights
regularly offer a unique display. Throughout the star-filled sky, green,
pink and purple Northern Lights weave and spin: flowing gently at first,
then bursting into a scene of furious agitation, before calming once again.
The average temperature during winter is -13 degrees Fahrenheit.
I hope you have enjoyed your trip to Nunavik, Canada. I am
really glad we went there just as summer is ending.
