Sacramento is the capital city of the U.S. state of California and the
seat of government of Sacramento County. It is at the meeting of the
Sacramento River and the American River in the northern portion of
California's expansive Central Valley. According to the 2010 census,
Sacramento had a population of 466,488. The city sits at an
elevation of 30 feet above sea level.
The city of Sacramento has many nicknames, including River City, Sac-town,
Sac, Sacto, Carmellia City of the World, and America's Most Diverse
City. It was founded in 1839 and incorporated on February 27, 1850.
Sacramento is the second most flood susceptible city in the U.S.,
after New Orleans.
December is normally the coldest month with average temperatures between
38 and 54 °F. July is normally the hottest month with average
temperatures between 58 and 92 °F. January tends to be the rainiest
month with an average of 3.67 inches and a yearly average of 18.52
inches of rain. There is no record of snowfall. The lowest
temperature recorded is 17 °F on December 11, 1932. The highest
temperature recorded was 114 °F on July 17, 1925.
