CHOCOLATE CHIP CARAMEL BARS



INGREDIENTS:


1 cup Crisco® Butter Flavor All-Vegetable Shortening

1/2 cup sugar

1/2 cup firmly packed light brown sugar

2 large eggs, lightly beaten

2 tsp. vanilla extract

2 cups Pillsbury® All Purpose Flour

1 tsp. salt

2 cups (12 oz. pkg.) semi-sweet chocolate chips

1 bag (14 oz.) caramels, unwrapped

2 tbsp. cold water




DIRECTIONS: Heat oven to 350ºF (175ºC).

Spray a 13x9" pan with baking spray. Coat lightly with flour.

Beat shortening, both sugars, eggs and vanilla in large bowl
with electric mixer on medium speed until blended.

Combine flour, baking soda and salt in small bowl.

Add gradually to shortening mixture at low speed. Beat until well blended.

Stir in chocolate chips.

Divide dough in half. Spread 1/2 in bottom of prepared pan.

Combine caramels and water in small saucepan; heat over low heat. Stir until caramels melt.

Spread over dough in pan within 1/2" of edge.

Spoon remaining dough atop caramel mixture. Spread carefully.

Bake 30 - 35 minutes, or until golden brown.

Loosen from sides of pan with knife. Cool completely.

Cut into bars. Makes 24 servings.
