Weary, Lonely Soldier

Weary, lonely, lies the soldier
In his blanket on the ground,
With no sweet “Good night”, to cheer him,
And no tender voice’s sound
Making music in the darkness,
Making light his toilsome hours,
Like a sun-beam in the forest,
Or a tomb wreathed o’er with flowers.

Thoughtful, hushed he lies, and tearful,
As his thoughts sadly roam
No “cozy little parlor,”
And no letters from his home,
And his waking and his dreaming
Softly blend themselves in one,
As the twilight is the mingling
Of the starlight and the sun.

And when sleep descends upon him,
Still his thought within his dream
Is of home, and friends, and loved ones,
Too busy in their life it would seem
To even think about him,
As for them his life he'll give.
While he goes through each day in battle.
For those more freely, they can live.

From no mail his thoughts do wander
To his mother’s dying cherished form,
As she gently said in parting,
“Thine in sunshine and in storm,
Thine in helpless childhood’s mourn,
And in boyhood’s joyous time,
I must leave thee now--God watch thee
Unto thy manhood’s ripened prime.”

Or, mayhap, amid the phantoms
Teeming through his brain,
His dear father whose hands are withered
With arthritis and aweful pain
And he hears his trembling accents,
Like a clarion singing high,
“Since not mine are youth and strength, boy,
Thou must victor prove, or die.”

Of his friends who have their own lives
and are too busy it would seem,
to send a card or letter.
Their mail would fulfill his dream.
Of brothers, sisters and loved ones,
With families of their own.
He hopes some day he'll see them,
When his return from Iraq is flown.
